With the new 982-generation, the marketing designation of the Boxster and Cayman was changed to Porsche 718, a nod to Porsche's racing heritage that won the Targa Florio race in 1959 and 1960. Because the 718 Cayman / Boxster has lost two cylinders, going from a naturally aspirated flat-6 engine to a turbocharged flat-4 engine, the name is meant to evoke a racing series that was won by a light car which outmaneuvered the cars with more powerful engines. The timeline of the 718 release started in 2016, with first model availability scheduled for June. The 718 base models featured two new horizontally-opposed flat-4 turbocharged engines of 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre displacements with increased torque and horsepower along with lower fuel consumption. The S model's turbocharger utilizes Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) technology. In October 2017, the GTS models were announced with their 2.5-litre engines upgraded to 261 kW (355 PS; 350 hp). The Boxster could accelerate from 0–97 km/h (60 mph) in 4.1 seconds, and the Cayman in 3.9 seconds.
Porsche 718 range of sports cars are the entry-level sports cars available in the Indian luxury car market. Porsche 718 range consists of two body types, two engines and two transmission options. The entry-level Petrol engine is a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4 cyl engine which is producing 300PS / 296BHP of power and 380NM of torque going to the set of rear wheels via 7-Speed PDK transmission. The engine can accelerate the Porsche 718 Cayman and Porsche 718 Boxster in 4.9sec and flat out both the models can do 275kmph top speed. The Porsche 718 Cayman is priced at Rs 85.46 lakh ex-showroom India and Porsche 718 Boxster is priced at Rs 89.46 lakh ex-showroom India. The bigger capacity engine 4.0-Litre Naturally Aspirated 6-cyl is found in Porsche Spyder and Porsche Cayman GT4, which is producing 420PS / 414BHP of power and 420NM of torque which send the power to rear wheels via 6-Speed Manual Transmission. These purest sports cars can accelerate from 0-100kmph in 4.4sec and they are capable of achieving 304kmph top speed. The Porsche Cayman GT4 is priced at Rs 1.64 crore ex-showroom India and Porsche Spyder is priced at Rs 1.60 crore ex-showroom India.
